STATEMENT: Treasurer Summers’ Statement on State of the State Address

Chicago City Treasurer Kurt Summers today released the following statement in response to Governor Bruce Rauner’s State of the State Address:

“Every day the state has gone without a budget, the Governor has deprived hardworking families of ‘mutual respect.’ This is not leadership. Taxpayers, children and our most vulnerable residents deserve immediate action and investment.

“As long as there is no agreement, the entire state faces an impasse to economic growth. When you have nearly $7 billion in unpaid bills, that leads to the state’s largest social service provider laying off 43% of its staff – that’s 750 people out of the workforce, without a paycheck and without the means to support those who need it most. The ripple effect of this gridlock is long-lasting. We need true bi-partisan compromise and I sincerely look forward to solutions that put Illinois back on the path to decently and fairly serving all residents.”
