Press Release: Buy Local, Unwrap Chicago
November 20, 2012
What if you could save gas, create jobs, and boost your local economy? If every household in Chicago committed to shift $100 of their holiday spending to local retailers, it would inject $25 million into the city’s economy. Please join Treasurer Stephanie Neely, Local First Chicago, and city and business leaders as we kickoff Buy Local Chicago.
What: Media Kickoff
When: Tues. Nov. 20, 10 am
Where: 2nd Floor City Hall, 121 North LaSalle Street
Why: When people shop locally they encourage local prosperity, create jobs, shore up the tax base, and keep a significantly greater portion of those revenues in the local economy.
Who: Join City Treasurer Stephanie Neely, Suzanne Keers of Local First Chicago, 48th Ward Ald. Harry Osterman, 20th Ward Ald. Willie Cochran and Omar Duque of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
5th Ward Ald. Leslie Hairston and 48th Ald. Osterman sponsored a City Council resolution proclaiming Nov. 23-Dec. 3, 2012 as Buy Local week in Chicago.
“I know that small business is the engine driving our economic recovery,” said Treasurer Stephanie Neely, “and this is a way for residents to promote local prosperity while enjoying unique products and personalized service.”
More than 35 Chicago neighborhoods and Chambers of Commerce are part of this city-wide effort. www.eatdrinkbuylocal.org
