Treasurer Summers Hires Director of Public Affairs

CHICAGO – City Treasurer Kurt Summers announced today the hiring of veteran financial journalist Peter Matuszak as the office’s Director of Public Affairs.

Matuszak most recently served as the press secretary for State Senator Kwame Raoul’s successful campaign for the Democratic Nomination for Attorney General of Illinois. Prior to managing the communications and media relations functions for Raoul, he was an investigative reporter at the Chicago Tribune covering government finance.

“It is critical to the mission of the Treasurer’s office that the public, media and investors have a clear and transparent understanding of how the city’s portfolio is being used to maximize its benefits for the people of Chicago,” said Summers.  “Mr. Matuszak’s extensive experience communicating complex financial concepts to engage a broad audience make him an ideal addition to our team.”

“As our office focuses on realizing the promise of the Chicago Community Catalyst Fund and proceeds as the largest city in the country to screen all corporate securities with ESG considerations, Pete’s insights and talents will help us deliver the results Chicagoans expect.”

Before working at the Chicago Tribune, Matuszak served as a senior policy analyst at the Civic Federation. There he provided subject matter expertise on municipal debt and infrastructure issues. Supported by a grant from the MacArthur Foundation, he co-authored comprehensive research and analysis regarding the financial condition of the State of Illinois, City of Chicago and other regional governments. His published work on government debt and tax policy has been recognized by the Governmental Research Association and he is a former Ravitch Fiscal Reporting Fellow at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

His earlier media career included legal affairs coverage, community reporting and sports broadcast journalism.
